Welcome to Gougane Barra. Make ‘the journey’and realise just how real it is. Our lakeside location, in a valley surrounded by mountains add to the "get away from it all" factor, which is very strong here. St. Finbarr
founded a monastery on an island in the lake in the 6th century and as always, the monks chose well. A tiny Oratory/Chapel sits on the island, it is one of the smallest and most romantic churches in the whole world.
There is magic in the valley.
Our 25 bedroom West Cork Hotel sits on the lakeshore and our family have been living here for 5 generations
. Neil's grandparents, Connie and Joan Cronin opened this hotel in 1936, 86 years ago.
Our hotel is small and cosy with 25 bedrooms, and is seasonal from late March to early November. We have a well stocked interesting bar
, two cosy sitting rooms, where you are welcome to drop in and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere here. Guests tend to return for generations, and new guests are always welcome.
We have bikes
, rowing boats and walking trails
to the back door and are on the edge of Coillte’s National Forest Park
, just a half mile walk from the front door. Make it a magical memory for a family gathering, an escape for no particular reason, a romantic get away, an activity break or a family walking holiday in the hills surrounding us.
Visit Gougane Barra at least once in your lifetime to experience just how special it is.
Make our home your home in West Cork.
We believe in sharing the Magic.
'Neil and Katy and the team are possessed of a rare spirit of generosity, a spirit that is genuinely unforgettable, so when you stay at Gougane Barra, the memories of the hotel, and the land and the forest and the Oratory, never actually leave you; feel-good memories that are fused into your being'
