Irelands First Female Botanist- from Ballylickey
The Ellen Hutchins Festival is on during Heritage Week in the Bantry Bay area every year.
This year the festival is from Saturday 15th of August to Sunday 23rd of August 2020
It is an annual celebration of her work, botany, botanical art, and the biodiversity and the beauty of Bantry Bay.
Ellen Hutchins was a field botanist who was plant hunting in the area in the early 1800's. She specialised in seaweeks, lichens, mosses and liverworts.
She discovered a great many plants new to science and new to Ireland.
She made beautiful and accurate drawings of seaweeds and many other plants.Her drawings are incredible and have been used in many publications.
