Theatre by the Lake 2016

After nine successful years of hosting theatre events at Gougane Barra (2005 - 2013), we were very excited to announce that Theatre by the Lake returned for 2016.

We also had a 1930's themed dinner on the 11th of September to celebrate the hotel's 80th anniversary.

What shows?

1. 'The Aran Islands'

14th-16th July (8pm - €20 / €16 concession)



A new one man show starring actor Brendan Conroy based on the journals of playwright J.M. Synge from his time living on the Aran Islands. A wonderful mix of tragedy, comedy and mystery.

2. 'God has No Country'

17th July (8pm - €15 / €12 concession)


One man show starring Donal Courtney for one night only!
It tells the true story of Kerryman Monsignor Hugh O' Flaherty ('Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican') and his life saving efforts during the Second World War. It is followed by a talk with Donal Courtney (writer & actor) describing his personal connections to the story.

 3. 'A Feast of Baroque Music' with Ensemble Dagda

18th July (8pm - €45 includes dinner)

  Step into the seventeenth century with a luxurious meal, followed by with some of the most exciting, evocative and emotional music of the age, brought to life on period instruments, here in one of Ireland's most historic places.
(This concert will take place in St. Finbarr's Oratory) 
With Emma Power, soprano; Caitríona O'Mahony, Aingeala de Búrca, violins; Norah O'Leary, cello; Tom Ó Drisceoil, harpsichord.

4. 'God Bless the Child'

19th - 24th July (8pm - €25 / €20 concession)

  A hilarious stage adaptation of three Frank O' Connor's much-loved childhood stories.
The three stories are: First Confession, My Oedipus Complex and The Genius.

5. 'The Big Fellow'

25th - 30th July (8pm - €25 / €20 concession)


As part of Ireland's 1916 commemorations, we are excited to host Cork's premiere of this two-man show with actors Gerard Adlum (as O’Connor) and Cillian Ó Gairbhí (as Collins). Based on Frank O’ Connor’s biography of Micheal Collins, it depicts the life of Micheal Collins. However, it also captures the turmoil of writer Frank O’ Connor who spent time fighting against Collins. The birth of a nation is retold by both men.

6. 'Máirtín O' Connor Band & Special Guests'

31st July (9pm - €30)


Máirtín O' Connor's Band is a world-renowned trio of Máirtín himself (accordion), Seamie O' Dowd (guitars, vocals) and Cathal Hayden (guitar, vocals).  

With special guests Nell Ní Chróinín, Conal Ó Ghráda and Colm Murphy.
